Generally nobody cares about the beauty benefits of water. Have you ever wondered what effect water has on your hair? What do tiny hydrogen particles take credit for?

When the level of water in hair drops it is immediately reflected by its appearance. Water helps us avoid dryness, breakage and other forms of damage. What makes water so big?

Effect of water on hair

10% of hair is built of water. This amount is enough to keep it in shape. It doesn’t seem much, does it? Water is a bonding agent in hair. Ceramides are the main building blocks of hair and they absorb lots of water to maintain resilience.

What effect does salty water have on hair?

Hair hates sea water because it causes extreme dryness and damage. It makes hair lose hydration at a blistering pace. You can minimize the losses if you rinse hair with tap water after a sea bath. Regular use of hair oil treatment helps maintain hydration too.

Effect of hard water on hair

Certain properties of water make it hard. If it contains ions of magnesium and calcium they cause the occurrence of scale which has a bad effect on hair. Hard water proves insufficient to remove dirt from the hair. In turn, you face some awful consequences like very dry scalp and hair, irritations or itchiness. This may lead to appearance of dandruff and hair loss. Hair may become greasy very fast because of product buildup which isn’t removed properly.

What causes hair dehydration?

This is caused by imbalance of sebum glands causing water to evaporate and consequently there isn’t enough oil to moisturize the hair. The dehydration may bring irreversible, disastrous results such as split ends, dull hair, breakage. Scalp suffers the most because of irritation and risk of dandruff.

There are lots of causes of hair dehydration. Harsh wind and solar radiation have a detrimental effect. Overwashing and using strong detergents lead to loss of water as well. My hair was hurt mostly because of color-treating and bleaching.

How to moisturize hair?

Water alone can’t prove optimal hydration so you need extra nutrients. For example, you can add some honey for a moisturizing effect. If you want to additionally brighten the hair, add some lemon juice. Vinegar has a smoothening effect while baking soda cleanses the hair.
