Alcohol vs skin. Why I no longer drink alcohol?

Today I’d like to do a beauty-health talk. I’ll try to convince you that excessive alcohol use has a bad effect on skin whereas cutting down on it has numerous benefits. I’ve already done it and have no regrets. Check out how booze causes damage to your good looks.

What’s the effect of alcohol on skin?

Too much of a good thing… This applies to alcohol too. If you overuse it, it is going to harm both your body and skin. Of course it is even recommended to have a glass of red wine from time to time because of antioxidants. Still, moderation is advised as well! On the one hand, alcohol is dangerous to health and life, and on the other hand, it helps us get rid of free radicals.

Alcohol dehydrates the skin

Alcohol is a toxic substance for our bodies and that is why kidneys remove it right away. However, they need lots of water for this purpose and that’s why we visit the toilet so often at parties. What’s the result? Body dehydration, incl. the skin. In turn, the skin becomes dull, sensitive and prone to irritations. To make things worse, it reacts poorly to outside factors and even to cosmetics.

Alcohol causes under-eye puffiness

This is connected with body dehydration, secretion of a certain group of hormones and slower kidney function. That’s why alcohol abusers have striking bags under the eyes.

Alcohol speeds up occurence of wrinkles

Alcohol consumption triggers facial lines too. This results from body and skin dehydration as well as “rinsing” nutrients, that is vitamins (A and B vitamins) and micro-nutrients (e.g. calcium, folic acid and zinc) out of the body.

Alcohol makes blood vessels dilate

That’s why when you have a glass of wine your cheeks go red. When you drink alcohol on a regular basis, the walls of blood vessels are stiff. Unsightly spider veins are visible. If you like, you can eliminate them by undergoing laser procedure.

Alcohol worsens the condition of hair and nails too

Excessive alcohol use makes our hair and nails worse, and they become dull, thinning and brittle. Their condition is poorer due to deficiency of zinc which is responsible for keeping hair and nails pretty and healthy.
